Proper Preparation Makes All the Difference

Why Preparation Matters More Than the Paint Itself

Even premium paint will fail to perform if it's applied to a poorly prepared surface. Preparation is what allows paint to bond properly, cover evenly and last for years rather than months, which is why experienced painters spend as much time preparing a surface as they do actually painting it. Skipping or rushing this stage is one of the most common reasons a paint job looks patchy or starts peeling early.

Cleaning, Filling and Sanding

Surfaces need to be washed down to remove dust, grease and mould before any paint goes on, since these residues stop paint from adhering correctly. Cracks, nail holes and other imperfections should be filled and left to cure, then sanded back smooth so they disappear under the finished coat rather than showing through. Sanding also helps new paint grip to existing surfaces, particularly glossier finishes that can otherwise cause peeling later on.

Priming: The Step You Shouldn't Skip

Primer creates a consistent, sealed surface for your topcoat to bond to, and it's especially important over bare plaster, patched areas, stains or previously dark colours that could bleed through. The right primer can also improve coverage, meaning fewer coats of your chosen paint are needed to achieve a rich, even finish.

How Integra Paint Approaches Preparation

Every job we take on starts with a thorough assessment and preparation process tailored to the surface and its condition, whether that's a weathered exterior or a freshly plastered interior wall. We take the time to clean, repair, sand and prime properly before a single coat of colour is applied, because we know that's what delivers a finish that looks great and lasts.
